Transfer news LIVE: Barcola’s PSG exit, Alvarez to Arsenal update, huge Man Utd boost

Arsenal are closing in on a blockbuster move for Julián Álvarez as Mikel Arteta’s side push for a Premier League title defence, while Liverpool’s pursuit of a new winger intensifies ahead of the transfer deadline. Manchester United, meanwhile, have made concrete progress in their pursuit of Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde. The final days of the summer window are shaping up to be pivotal across the Premier League, with multiple high-profile deals in motion.

Arsenal’s Álvarez pursuit gathers pace

Arsenal are prioritising the signing of Julián Álvarez to bolster their attacking options as they aim to retain their Premier League crown. The Argentina forward, who was initially linked with Barcelona, is now viewed as a key target for Arteta’s side after their enquiries over Juventus target Kenan Yildiz were rebuffed. Álvarez’s potential arrival would cap a productive summer of recruitment for the Gunners, who have already strengthened their squad with the additions of Declan Rice and William Saliba.

The move has taken a significant step forward, with reports from Sky Sports suggesting Arsenal are prepared to table a £130m bid for Álvarez, who has been left out of Atlético Madrid’s squad amid speculation over his future. The club’s stance has drawn jeers from home supporters during their recent La Liga fixture, but the player’s willingness to join the Premier League champions appears to be a decisive factor in the negotiations.

Liverpool’s winger hunt intensifies

Liverpool are doubling down on their search for a new winger, with the need for greater attacking creativity underscored by their dramatic 2-2 draw at Newcastle. Despite the late equaliser from Dominik Szoboszlai, the Reds’ defensive vulnerabilities were exposed, prompting calls for reinforcements in wide areas. Their primary targets are Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh and PSG’s Bradley Barcola, though their pursuit of the latter has hit a snag after the French club left him out of their squad for a recent Ligue 1 fixture against Rennes.

Minteh, meanwhile, has reportedly agreed personal terms with Liverpool, though a deal remains contingent on Brighton’s valuation. The Reds have also been linked with Real Madrid’s Endrick, though no concrete progress has been made on that front. Jamie Carragher has been vocal about Liverpool’s midfield deficiencies, criticising their lack of defensive cover and calling for a more dynamic presence alongside Wataru Endo. However, Liverpool are resisting the urge to sign a central midfielder, instead focusing on wide options before the window slams shut.

Carragher’s frustration stems from Liverpool’s chaotic start to the season, where their midfield was repeatedly exposed by Newcastle’s pace. His comments on Sky Sports highlighted the structural issues: “Szoboszlai has to go to the No 10. I’ve always seen this coming. When people are saying [Wirtz] has got to go to No 10, that means Szoboszlai’s got to be in the team and he’s not a central midfield player. I thought this would come up in six weeks, I think it’s coming up right now.” The Reds’ refusal to address the issue directly contrasts with their aggressive pursuit of wingers, where they have seen two bids for Minteh rejected by Brighton.

Manchester United’s Balde breakthrough

Manchester United have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde. Reports from Marca indicate that Balde, who has struggled for game time under Xavi, is now open to leaving Camp Nou after being left out of Barcelona’s squad for their recent La Liga fixture against Elche. United, who have been linked with a loan deal for the Spain international, are now considered the frontrunners for his signature.

The potential arrival of Balde would address United’s defensive frailties, particularly on the left flank, where Tyrell Malacia has struggled to provide consistency. The club’s interest in the 23-year-old adds another dimension to their transfer activity, which has already seen them sign Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee in recent weeks. Balde’s willingness to consider a temporary move could prove decisive in securing his services before the deadline, though Barcelona may push for a permanent deal given his age and potential.

What comes next?

The next 48 hours will be critical for several Premier League clubs. Arsenal’s pursuit of Álvarez appears to be nearing a conclusion, with a deal expected to be finalised imminently. Liverpool’s focus on Minteh and Barcola could also reach a resolution, though the Reds may need to adjust their valuation to secure either player. For Manchester United, Balde’s potential arrival would represent a significant coup, though Barcelona may demand a permanent deal rather than a loan.

With the transfer window set to close on September 1, the coming days will determine whether these high-profile targets are secured or whether clubs will need to regroup before the new season begins. One thing is certain: the final stretch of the summer transfer window promises drama, twists, and high-stakes negotiations that will shape the Premier League landscape for the season ahead.
