Transfer news LIVE: Bruno Guimaraes update, Liverpool eye PSG double deal, Man Utd latest

Transfer deadline day is already simmering, but Wednesday’s headlines confirm the window is heating up fast. Arsenal are within touching distance of Bruno Guimaraes, Liverpool are circling two Paris Saint-Germain targets, and Manchester United’s left-back hunt is tightening. The next 48 hours will shape the Premier League’s top table for the coming season.

Arsenal’s midfield coup inches closer

Arsenal and Newcastle United have finally agreed terms for Bruno Guimaraes, with the Gunners set to pay an £80 million upfront fee to secure the Brazil international. According to the Newcastle Chronicle, the full amount will land in St James’ Park before the player undertakes a medical and completes his move. Mikel Arteta’s side have been chasing the midfielder since January, and the deal now looks imminent. The BBC’s reporting indicates Guimaraes could arrive at Emirates Stadium within days, though no official timeline has been confirmed by either club.

The deal caps a turbulent summer for Newcastle, who have already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali. Guimaraes’ departure leaves Eddie Howe needing to rebuild yet another key department before the transfer window shuts. For Arsenal, the capture is a statement of intent: they are willing to pay a premium to keep pace with Manchester City and Liverpool, and Guimaraes’ arrival would address a midfield that struggled for control in tight games last term.

Liverpool’s Barcola pursuit collides with PSG’s own business

Liverpool’s summer recruitment drive is taking shape around two Paris Saint-Germain targets. The Reds have been pursuing Bradley Barcola for weeks, but French reports now suggest they are also eyeing his teammate Ibrahima Mbaye, priced at around £42 million. Barcola remains the priority, with Liverpool believed to have lodged a bid close to his £145 million valuation. The timing, however, is complicated by PSG’s own transfer activity: the Ligue 1 champions are set to sign Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco, a move that could free up funds or playing time for Barcola’s potential exit.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have moved quickly to address last season’s inconsistency in wide areas, and Barcola’s direct dribbling and pressing would fit their high-tempo system. Yet the Reds’ caution over Cody Gakpo’s future suggests they are not yet ready to cede control of their forward ranks. If Liverpool land both Barcola and Mbaye, they would add youthful energy and positional versatility to a squad that has often lacked depth in wide positions.

Manchester United’s left-back chase faces a Newcastle roadblock

Manchester United remain active in the market, with Lewis Hall now the subject of a reported £60 million bid from Old Trafford. The Newcastle left-back has been a transfer priority for Erik ten Hag, but the Magpies have dug in their heels. Newcastle insist Hall is not for sale, leaving United to explore alternatives if they want to strengthen that flank before the window closes. The stalemate underscores the broader challenge facing Ten Hag: United’s squad still lacks clear depth in key positions, and the club’s financial constraints limit their ability to force through expensive deals.

Tactical implications: who benefits most from these moves?

Guimaraes’ arrival at Arsenal would immediately address their midfield resilience. Last season, Declan Rice and Thomas Partey often struggled to shield the back four in transitions, and Guimaraes’ ball-carrying and defensive work rate would ease that burden. His ability to progress play under pressure would complement Rice’s box-to-box energy, while Partey could focus on deeper recovery roles. For Liverpool, Barcola’s addition would give them a player capable of stretching high blocks and exploiting half-spaces, something Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz did only intermittently. If Mbaye joins on the cheap, he could provide cover at left-back or in midfield, offering tactical flexibility without a premium price tag.

At Manchester United, the Hall saga highlights the club’s structural issues. Even if Ten Hag secures an alternative left-back, the absence of a clear heir to Luke Shaw suggests deeper squad planning is overdue. The window is closing, and United’s inability to finalise deals risks leaving them exposed in a competitive top four race.

The next 48 hours will determine whether Arsenal land their marquee midfielder, Liverpool pull off a double PSG swoop, or Manchester United’s left-back hunt stalls entirely. One thing is certain: the Premier League’s hierarchy is about to get a reshuffle before the season even starts.
