Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd make Baleba breakthrough, Arsenal close on Konsa, Liverpool drop PSG deal

Manchester United have taken a decisive step toward reshaping their midfield after submitting a £60m bid for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, marking their third major outfield signing of the summer. The move follows the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, both confirmed within 48 hours of each other, and arrives as Erik ten Hag seeks to address a squad still short of depth in key areas. Baleba, 22, was previously valued by Brighton at over £100m last summer but has seen his price recalibrate after a difficult campaign in the Premier League, during which he made 28 appearances and contributed two goals and three assists. United’s offer includes a £5m performance-related escalator clause, reflecting both the player’s potential and the urgency in the final days of the window.

Arsenal edge closer to Konsa, while Liverpool pivot away from PSG

Arsenal are within touching distance of securing Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa for around £50m, a deal that would provide Mikel Arteta with a right-sided defensive option as he rebuilds following William Saliba’s long-term injury. Konsa, 26, has started 31 of Villa’s 38 Premier League games this season and ranks among the division’s most aerially dominant centre-backs, winning 68% of his aerial duels. The Gunners have identified defensive reinforcement as a priority, with Konsa’s profile aligning with their need for a ball-playing defender capable of stepping into a high-pressing system. Meanwhile, Liverpool have dropped their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye and are now in active talks with Inter Milan over a potential €35m (£30m) deal for Curtis Jones. The Reds have also turned their attention to Bradley Barcola, though no agreement has been reached with PSG at this stage.

These developments come as clubs scramble to finalise deals before the September 1 deadline, with several high-profile transfers already reshaping the market. Barcelona’s capture of Rodri from Manchester City on Wednesday night has already reshaped the midfield landscape, while Arsenal remain linked with a move for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez. The window’s frenetic pace shows no sign of slowing, with clubs balancing ambition against the constraints of finite resources and the logistical challenges of integrating new signings mid-season.

Maguire’s transfer plea ignored as United’s squad-building stalls

Harry Maguire has twice requested an exit from Manchester United this summer, only for his pleas to go unanswered as the club’s transfer activity has fallen short of expectations. United have added just three first-team players—Santos, Tielemans, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow—despite Maguire’s public insistence on a “huge squad” capable of competing for trophies. The former captain has framed competition for places as essential, stating that he wants the club to “bring in as many as they want” to strengthen the squad, even if it risks his own starting berth. His comments underscore the tension between United’s cautious approach and the demands of a squad still rebuilding under Ten Hag, particularly as the season opener at Hull City approaches.

With Maguire’s contract running until 2026 and no immediate replacement identified, his frustration reflects broader questions about United’s transfer strategy. The club’s failure to address defensive and midfield depth has left questions unanswered, though Baleba’s potential arrival would at least provide another option in midfield. The coming days will reveal whether Ten Hag can deliver the squad he believes is necessary to mount a title challenge, or if United’s cautious approach risks leaving them exposed in multiple competitions.

What comes next: Baleba’s role, Konsa’s impact, and Liverpool’s Barcola gamble

If Baleba joins United, he is expected to compete for minutes in a midfield that already includes Tielemans, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo. His profile as a progressive passer with defensive work rate could offer Ten Hag tactical flexibility, particularly in games where United need to control tempo against high-pressing opponents. Konsa’s potential arrival at Arsenal would immediately bolster a backline unsettled by Saliba’s absence, while his ability to progress the ball from deep could help Arteta’s side maintain their title ambitions. The defender’s arrival would also provide competition for Gabriel Magalhães and William Saliba’s long-term deputy, Jakub Kiwior.

Liverpool’s shift toward Jones and Barcola reflects a broader trend of clubs recalibrating targets mid-window. Jones, a versatile midfielder with 112 Premier League appearances, would add depth to a Reds side already linked with defensive reinforcements. Barcola, meanwhile, offers a direct threat that could complement Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez in attack, though PSG’s asking price for the French winger remains a stumbling block. Neither deal is guaranteed, but both signal Liverpool’s intent to refresh their squad before the window closes.

As the deadline looms, the next 72 hours will determine whether these moves come to fruition—or if clubs will be forced to regroup before the season’s first major tests. For United, the Baleba deal, if completed, would at least provide some momentum heading into a campaign where expectations remain high. For Arsenal and Liverpool, the coming days could define their title credentials before a ball is kicked in anger, with Konsa’s potential arrival offering a clear statement of intent from Arteta’s side.
