Transfer Rumors: Pure Silence for Enzo Fernandez; Arsenal to Test Mourinho’s Endrick Plans – Sports Illustrated

Arsenal’s transfer strategy has taken a striking turn this week, shifting from the pursuit of established stars to a more speculative approach centered on unproven talent. After months of pursuing Julian Álvarez and Bradley Barcola, the Gunners are now exploring a move for Endrick, the 19-year-old Brazilian forward whose stock has risen dramatically since his breakthrough at Real Madrid. Meanwhile, the club’s pursuit of Enzo Fernández has stalled amid reports of rival interest, while Manchester City’s sudden involvement in the Álvarez saga has added a fresh layer of unpredictability to an already complex transfer landscape.

Arsenal’s Endrick pursuit: ambition meets uncertainty

According to Sky Sports’ Paper Talk, Arsenal have held discussions with Real Madrid over the availability of Endrick, the 19-year-old Brazilian forward who has emerged as one of the most coveted young talents in world football. The Gunners’ interest comes as Real Madrid have indicated a potential willingness to sell the forward, though no concrete offer has been tabled. Endrick’s potential arrival would represent a significant statement of intent from Mikel Arteta’s side, particularly given the club’s recent investment in high-profile attacking options such as Declan Rice and Kai Havertz. However, the timing of these talks raises questions about Arsenal’s long-term planning. The club’s frontline already features established Premier League performers like Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Gabriel Jesus, yet the addition of Endrick would further reshape the squad’s dynamics. The risk of overhauling the team so drastically in a single transfer window could prove costly if the new signings fail to integrate quickly, especially given the Premier League’s relentless physical demands.

Real Madrid’s reported openness to a deal suggests Arsenal may have an opportunity to act before the window closes, but the Gunners’ track record of securing high-profile targets in recent years remains untested. The club has previously struggled to close deals for marquee signings, most notably failing to land Declan Rice last summer before eventually securing him from West Ham in a late-window move. Endrick’s age and potential make him a high-risk, high-reward proposition, and Arsenal will need to move swiftly if they are to secure his services before rival suitors—including Manchester City and Chelsea—make their intentions clearer.

Álvarez’s future: a three-way tussle intensifies

The saga surrounding Julian Álvarez has escalated, with Manchester City reportedly considering a reunion with the Argentine striker. City sold Álvarez to Atlético Madrid for £81 million in August 2024, but the club now values him at £128 million—a figure that would make him the most expensive player in Premier League history if he were to join an English club. Arsenal have been the primary suitors for Álvarez, but Atlético’s refusal to sell to Barcelona has complicated matters, leaving the Gunners in a precarious position as the transfer window nears its close.

Atlético’s CEO, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, claimed on Thursday that Álvarez is in “poor health” due to the stress of the transfer saga, a statement that underscores the emotional toll of the situation. The Argentine’s future has become a three-way battle between Arsenal, Barcelona, and now Manchester City, with Atlético’s valuation of £128 million serving as a significant obstacle. Arsenal’s pursuit has been relentless, but their inability to force a move suggests Atlético are prepared to dig in their heels. City’s sudden interest adds another layer of unpredictability, with the possibility of a bidding war looming if Arsenal fail to secure a deal before the deadline. The Gunners’ inability to land Álvarez would represent a major setback in their attempt to strengthen their attacking options, particularly given the striker’s proven Premier League pedigree from his time at Manchester City.

Enzo Fernández: the missing piece in Arsenal’s puzzle

While Arsenal’s focus has been on Álvarez and Endrick, the club’s pursuit of Enzo Fernández has been met with a conspicuous lack of progress. Reports from Mirror Football suggested that Manchester City had struck a deal with Chelsea for the midfielder, with a £120 million fee and a six-year contract agreed. The news, if confirmed, would leave Arsenal with little recourse in their pursuit of the Brazilian international, as Chelsea’s willingness to part with Fernández at such a late stage complicates their options. Fernández’s potential arrival would have provided Arsenal with a creative midfield outlet to complement Rice and Havertz, but the club’s inability to secure a marquee signing could force Arteta to reconsider his long-term plans, particularly if the squad’s depth remains a concern.

The absence of concrete updates on Fernández’s situation highlights the challenges Arsenal face in navigating a transfer market where their rivals are equally aggressive. Chelsea’s reported willingness to sell Fernández for £120 million—despite his inconsistent form last season—suggests they are prioritizing financial flexibility over squad building. For Arsenal, the loss of Fernández would be a significant blow, particularly given the club’s need to strengthen their midfield options ahead of a congested fixture schedule.

What comes next: deadline day dilemmas

Arsenal’s transfer strategy this summer has been defined by bold ambitions and frustrating delays. The club’s interest in Endrick signals a willingness to take risks, but the lack of progress on Álvarez and Fernández suggests that time may be running out. The next 48 hours will be critical, with the Gunners needing to make decisive moves if they are to reshape their squad before the window slams shut.

For Arteta, the challenge is twofold: balancing the need for immediate impact with the long-term vision of building a title-contending side. The pursuit of Endrick, Álvarez, and Fernández has exposed the club’s vulnerabilities, but it has also demonstrated their determination to compete at the highest level. Whether that determination translates into tangible success remains to be seen—but the clock is ticking, and the Gunners cannot afford another missed opportunity.
