True Love seeks Prix Maurice de Gheest crown at Deauville

True Love arrives at Deauville as the standout name in a strong Prix Maurice de Gheest field, where the Aidan O’Brien-trained miler bids to add another Group 1 to her CV this afternoon. The 1000 Guineas winner has already shown the speed and versatility to handle the mile at the highest level, but the question remains whether she can reverse last month’s narrow defeat at the same track in the Prix Jean Prat. With Ryan Moore relinquishing the ride, Wayne Lordan takes the reins as True Love attempts to claim top billing in France.

Aidan O’Brien’s miler seeks redemption on French soil

True Love’s credentials rest on a spring campaign that included victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes over this distance, a performance that underlined her aptitude for the Prix Maurice de Gheest’s exacting test. Yet her defeat in the Prix Jean Prat—where she was narrowly beaten by Thesecretadversary—exposed a lingering question about her ability to handle the final furlong when pressed. The Group 1 victory at Newmarket remains her most prized asset, but the narrow margins in France suggest she may need to sharpen her finishing instincts to outstay rivals like Stolen Kiss and Division. Lordan’s presence in the plate is a notable change, replacing Moore, who has opted out of the ride after consecutive rides at Chepstow.

Stolen Kiss, another improving force, has already beaten last year’s winner Sajir twice this season and finished fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, a result that places him among the race’s best-handicapped performers. His ability to concede weight to True Love could prove decisive if he can reproduce that form under Alexis Pouchin. Meanwhile, Division—fresh from a strong Goodwood Festival—has the class to trouble the market, having chased home Venetian Sun in both the Sandy Lane Stakes and Commonwealth Cup before running fifth in the July Cup. The son of Kingman may not have broken his duck yet, but his consistency this summer marks him as a live each-way option.

Deauville’s Group 1 stage set for a tactical duel

The Prix Maurice de Gheest has become a proving ground for milers transitioning between sprinting and middle-distance form, and this year’s renewal offers a blend of speed and stamina. True Love’s versatility is her greatest asset, but the race’s tactical demands could favor horses with a turn of foot over those who rely on late runs. Take Charge Star, beaten only by Thesecretadversary in the Jersey Stakes, enters calculations as a potential closer, while Samangan—despite narrow defeats to Division and True Love—cannot be dismissed entirely. The field’s depth means the winner may need to dictate terms from the front or produce a perfectly timed burst to overcome the late challengers.

The presence of Distant Storm in the earlier 2000 Guineas third race adds further intrigue to Deauville’s card, but the focus remains on the mile showdown. O’Brien’s yard has a habit of peaking at the right time, and True Love’s pedigree—honed in elite juvenile and classic company—gives her the profile of a horse capable of handling the pressure. Yet the Prix Jean Prat defeat lingers, and the market’s confidence will hinge on whether she can erase that memory with a clinical display.

Why this race matters beyond the prize money

For True Love, a Group 1 victory at Deauville would cement her status as a top-class miler and enhance her broodmare prospects, given her proven speed and adaptability. The race also serves as a shop window for horses like Division and Stolen Kiss, whose form this summer suggests they are on an upward curve. For connections, the prize money is secondary to the profile-raising potential—a win here could attract higher-profile engagements in 2027 and beyond.

The tactical nuances of the Prix Maurice de Gheest reward precision over flair. A horse that can settle comfortably and kick for home in the final furlong will have the edge, while those forced to chase may find the uphill finish at Deauville too steep. True Love’s ability to race prominently or reserve her effort could be the difference between glory and also-ran status.

As the field parades at 3.40pm, the question is not just whether True Love can win, but whether she can do so in a manner that silences doubts about her stamina and temperament. The Group 1 stage demands more than ability; it requires a performance that transcends the narrow defeats of the past. If she delivers, O’Brien’s yard will have another jewel to add to its crown. If not, the race will still provide a clear pointer to the season’s next milers.
