Trump Backs FIFA Boss Infantino Amid Growing Revolt By Soccer Nations – Forbes

Donald Trump’s public endorsement of FIFA president Gianni Infantino arrives as a bloc of soccer federations escalates efforts to challenge the leadership of world football’s governing body. The former U.S. president’s backing, articulated on his social platform Truth Social, signals a rare cross-Atlantic alignment between the White House and FIFA’s corridors, just as European and South American associations push for structural reforms and greater accountability at the top of the sport.

Why the revolt is gathering force

National soccer bodies from multiple confederations—including CONMEBOL and UEFA—have voiced frustration over Infantino’s handling of governance, financial transparency, and the expanded Club World Cup, which critics argue favors wealthy clubs and commercial interests over the global game’s traditional pyramid. The dissent has crystallized into calls for an extraordinary FIFA Congress to review the president’s mandate, with federations citing concerns that recent reforms were pushed through without adequate consultation. The growing chorus of discontent has prompted Infantino to accelerate a listening tour across member associations, though the depth of support remains uneven across regions. Notably, dissenting voices have pointed to the 2026 World Cup host selection process as a case study in opaque decision-making, where commercial guarantees reportedly outweighed sporting merits in evaluating bids.

Trump’s intervention shifts the diplomatic terrain

Trump’s endorsement, framed as a vote of confidence in Infantino’s leadership, complicates the opposition’s narrative that the FIFA president operates without broad international backing. The statement, posted to Truth Social, underscores the former president’s alignment with Infantino’s vision for commercial expansion and rapid tournament scheduling, a strategy that has drawn both investment and skepticism. Analysts note that Trump’s intervention could embolden Infantino to resist calls for early elections or sweeping constitutional changes, while simultaneously raising the political stakes for any federation seeking to challenge the status quo. The endorsement follows months of behind-the-scenes lobbying by Infantino’s allies in the U.S., where Major League Soccer and key stakeholders have emphasized the benefits of FIFA’s commercial strategy, including increased revenue sharing for development programs.

What comes next: Congress, reforms, and recalibration

The next decisive moment will be the FIFA Congress scheduled for next month in Kigali, Rwanda, where member associations will debate procedural motions that could either entrench Infantino’s authority or open the door to leadership contests. Infantino has signaled willingness to compromise on transparency measures, including independent audits of financial flows, but has ruled out reversing the Club World Cup expansion. The standoff now centers on whether federations can coalesce around specific reforms—such as term limits for senior officials or stricter conflict-of-interest rules—or whether the bloc will fracture under pressure from commercial stakeholders and political patrons. With Trump’s endorsement adding a new layer of geopolitical color, the coming weeks will determine whether Infantino’s presidency enters a new phase of consolidation or faces its most serious test yet.

For now, the soccer world watches as federations weigh their options. Infantino retains the backing of key confederations—including CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation—and commercial partners such as FIFA’s long-term sponsor Adidas, but the revolt has exposed fissures that were once dormant. Whether the challenge gathers enough momentum to force a leadership change or merely extracts concessions will hinge on the next Congress—and the willingness of dissenting federations, including those from Africa and Oceania, to sustain their campaign beyond symbolic statements. The outcome may also hinge on whether Infantino can deliver on his pledge to publish a detailed breakdown of FIFA’s financial disclosures by the end of the year, a move that could either quell dissent or fuel further scrutiny.
