UEFA Champions League

The Champions League play-offs reached their climax on Tuesday night, with seven second-leg ties deciding who will join the 36 automatic qualifiers for the 2026/27 edition. Among them, Celtic faced LASK in a tie that carried extra weight after the Scottish champions’ elimination from the Europa League qualifying rounds. The outcome in Austria set the tone for the rest of the night, where momentum shifted in dramatic fashion before the final whistle.

LASK expose Celtic’s European frailties

Celtic arrived in Linz with a first-leg deficit to overturn, but LASK’s disciplined pressing and clinical finishing made that task impossible. The home side controlled the opening exchanges, and after 18 minutes they broke the deadlock when a set-piece routine delivered the opener. Celtic’s defensive structure collapsed under sustained pressure, and within three minutes they were two down. The second strike came from a counter-moving midfielder who exploited the space behind the full-backs, leaving the Celtic defence stretched and exposed. By half-time, the tie was effectively over, and LASK’s manager hailed the performance as proof of his side’s tactical progress this season.

Seven ties, seven stories

The night unfolded across multiple venues, with each second leg producing its own narrative. In one tie, the away side equalised late to force extra time, only for a defensive error to gift the lead back in the final minutes. Another match saw the underdogs dominate possession but fall to a single-goal defeat, their Champions League dreams ending by a margin of one mistake. The aggregate scores reflected tight margins everywhere, with no side managing more than a two-goal cushion across both legs. The play-offs have become a crucible where small details decide who progresses and who falls short.

What the results mean for 2026/27

With the field now set for the group stage, the final seven qualifiers bring a mix of experience and unpredictability. The sides who scraped through will need to adapt quickly to the expanded format, where every point counts in a league that now includes eight extra fixtures. For those who fell at the final hurdle, the disappointment is immediate, but the lessons from these play-offs—tactical resilience, defensive organisation, and clinical finishing—will shape their domestic campaigns. The Champions League’s new structure demands consistency, and these second legs have already revealed which teams are ready and which still have work to do.

The Champions League play-offs have delivered their verdict. Now, the focus shifts to the group-stage draw, where the 43 qualified teams will learn their fate for a competition that promises more matches, more drama, and higher stakes than ever before.
