Unai Emery reveals Ollie Watkins apology – but confirms tearful Aston Villa departure

Unai Emery has offered a rare glimpse into the emotional farewell Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins received before his £50m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. The England international, who missed Villa’s opening-day defeat to Brighton after a contract dispute, later apologised to teammates and staff, prompting a tearful goodbye from the manager.

Emery’s apology accepted as Watkins exits

Emery confirmed Watkins’ contrition after the striker skipped Villa’s 4-0 loss at the Amex Stadium, telling reporters Watkins “told us after the match that he was sorry and he told us he made a mistake and was wrong.” The apology was swiftly accepted by Emery and the squad, with the manager describing Watkins as “a fantastic guy, even more so than as a player.” Their farewell was punctuated by a “big hug and a small cry,” Emery revealed, underscoring the personal cost of Villa’s summer exodus.

The striker’s departure is part of a wider haemorrhaging of talent from a Europa League-winning side. Six players who started that final in Budapest—Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Emiliano Martínez, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne—have since left, with Chelsea poised to sign Martínez for £7.5m and Nicolas Jackson incoming from the same club. Emery framed the sales as “good for the club,” insisting Villa’s competitive edge remains intact despite the turnover.

Villa’s squad crisis collides with Champions League ambition

Villa’s squad overhaul arrives as they prepare for their Champions League debut, a campaign that demands cohesion and depth. Yet their transfer business has been defined by departures rather than reinforcements, with net spend over the past five seasons the second-lowest in the Premier League—only Brighton’s is lower. The contrast with Tottenham, who spent an estimated £322m this summer, has sharpened criticism of the financial regulations restricting Villa’s owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens. While Spurs’ outlay has drawn scrutiny, Villa’s frugality under cost-control rules has left them vulnerable to losing key players.

Emery’s optimism about Jackson’s readiness—he could debut against Arsenal on Monday—may be tested immediately. The Gunners, drawn alongside Villa in the Champions League, will provide a stern early test for a side still finding its feet. The draw’s full implications are detailed in The Independent’s live coverage, where Villa’s path to the knockout stages looks daunting.

Market moves expose Villa’s balancing act

Villa’s recruitment has been a study in damage limitation. While Jackson’s £70m arrival from Chelsea offsets Martínez’s sale, the club’s attempts to bolster the defence have been hamstrung by financial constraints. Reports of a deal for West Ham’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka were swiftly linked to Villa’s squad overhaul, though the club has yet to confirm the move. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s reported talks to sell Jackson—now a Villa player—highlight the chaotic crosscurrents of this transfer window.

The sale of Anthony Gordon to Nottingham Forest for £50m, as covered by The Guardian, underscores the broader trend of Premier League clubs offloading assets to balance books. For Villa, the challenge is twofold: replacing Watkins’ goals while navigating a squad rebuild under financial fair play restrictions. Emery’s insistence that “the objective is to get progressively in the same” way suggests a pragmatic approach, but the early evidence—Watkins’ absence, Martínez’s exit, and Brighton’s demolition—points to turbulence ahead.

Villa’s Champions League bow arrives amid a transfer paradox: a squad stripped of its Europa League spine yet expected to compete domestically and in Europe. Emery’s emotional farewell to Watkins may be the most human moment of a summer defined by spreadsheets and departures, but the real test begins now. With Jackson yet to prove himself and Wan-Bissaka’s potential arrival still unconfirmed, Villa’s ability to steady the ship will hinge on more than just financial prudence—it will require Emery to coax cohesion from a fractured squad.
