Villa reach verbal agreement to sign PSG’s Mbaye

Aston Villa have moved swiftly to bolster their attacking options ahead of a pivotal Premier League season, reaching a verbal agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye. The deal, confirmed by Sky Sports on Friday evening, underscores Unai Emery’s determination to rebuild his squad after a turbulent summer that saw key departures and a heavy opening-day defeat.

Villa’s summer rebuild gathers pace

Emery has made clear his intention to reshape Villa’s attack following Ollie Watkins’ departure to Saudi Arabia and the sale of key defenders. The arrival of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea remains in flux, with the £47.5m deal still awaiting finalisation, but Mbaye’s potential signing represents another step toward addressing the void left by outgoing talent. The 18-year-old winger, who has already represented Senegal at international level, fits Emery’s profile for a dynamic, versatile attacker capable of operating on either flank.

Villa’s pursuit of Mbaye is not a sudden shift but the culmination of months of scouting. Sky Sports reported in March that the winger was a long-term target, with Villa identifying him as a player who could thrive in a system demanding high pressing and direct transitions. His 2025-26 Ligue 1 record—three goals and two assists in 24 appearances—suggests a player comfortable in a competitive league, though his minutes at PSG were limited, a factor that likely influenced his desire for regular football.

Why Mbaye fits Emery’s vision

Emery’s preference for wingers who can stretch play and contribute defensively aligns with Mbaye’s profile. The Senegalese international predominantly operates on the right side, a position where Villa have lacked consistent options since the sale of Emiliano Buendía. His inclusion would provide competition for existing forwards and offer tactical flexibility, particularly in Champions League fixtures where depth is crucial.

The timing of this agreement is significant. With Villa set to face Arsenal in their next league match, Emery will be keen to finalise deals before the transfer window closes. The club’s pursuit of Rafael Leão from AC Milan fell through after reports emerged of a move to Galatasaray, leaving Villa to pivot toward Mbaye as a more attainable alternative. Emery’s willingness to adapt his targets reflects a pragmatic approach, one that prioritises immediate squad reinforcement over chasing marquee names.

What comes next for Villa and Mbaye

While a verbal agreement has been reached, the formalities remain. Mbaye’s contract with PSG runs until 2028, meaning Villa will need to negotiate a fee that satisfies both parties. Emery’s track record of securing transfers—even amid uncertainty—suggests confidence in closing the deal, though Jackson’s protracted move from Chelsea serves as a reminder that nothing is guaranteed until paperwork is signed.

Villa’s Champions League campaign, which begins with a trip to Galatasaray, adds urgency to the process. Emery will hope Mbaye can integrate quickly, given the demands of European football. The winger’s age and potential could make him a long-term asset, but his early impact may depend on how swiftly he adapts to the physicality of the Premier League.

For Mbaye, the move represents a chance to prove himself in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues. His development under Emery could be pivotal in shaping his career, particularly if he becomes a regular in a Villa side that has shown ambition despite off-field turbulence.

Villa’s transfer activity this summer has been defined by necessity rather than luxury. The loss of Watkins and Konsa for a combined £100m-plus has forced Emery to rebuild with pragmatism, and Mbaye’s arrival—if completed—would underscore that approach. The question now is whether the winger can deliver the consistency Villa need to challenge for a top-four finish, or if his move will be remembered as another summer transfer that failed to live up to its promise.
