West Ham latest: Potts set to undergo Club Brugge medical

West Ham’s transfer activity has taken another decisive turn, with centre-back Jarrod Potts set to undergo a medical with Club Brugge on Thursday. The development follows weeks of speculation linking the Hammers with a move to strengthen their defensive options, and comes as the club continues to reshape its squad under the ownership of David Sullivan and Daniel Křetínský.

Why Potts’ move matters now

The timing of Potts’ potential departure is significant. West Ham have already completed the permanent signing of centre-back Gonçalo Inácio from Sporting CP, adding depth to a defence that has struggled with consistency this season. Potts, who joined West Ham from Sunderland in January 2023, has made 28 appearances across all competitions but has found game time increasingly limited under manager Julian Ward. His exit would free up a first-team spot and allow younger defenders like Angelo Ogbonna and Nayef Aguerd to feature more regularly.

Club Brugge’s interest underscores their need for defensive reinforcement ahead of a congested fixture schedule. The Belgian side, competing in both the Pro League and Europa League, have been linked with multiple Premier League defenders this summer. Potts’ arrival would provide immediate cover, particularly after the club sold key defender Raphael Onyedika to Celtic earlier this month.

What happens next

Potts’ medical is scheduled for Thursday, with a view to finalising the deal before the transfer window closes. The Hammers are expected to recoup a fee in the region of £10 million, reflecting his age (27) and the fact that he has two years left on his contract. A clause in his Sunderland deal originally included a sell-on percentage, but West Ham are likely to negotiate a clean exit given the urgency of the situation.

If the move is completed, West Ham will have completed five permanent signings this summer, including Inácio, defensive midfielder Mats Wieffer, and forwards Danny Ings and Michail Antonio. The club’s transfer business has been shaped by financial constraints, with Sullivan recently confirming that any further incomings would need to be “sensible and sustainable.” Potts’ sale would generate funds to offset the cost of Inácio’s £45 million fee and reinforce the squad’s depth.

The bigger picture at West Ham

Potts’ potential departure is part of a broader restructuring at West Ham, where the ownership group led by Amanda Staveley has taken a more active role in financial planning. Staveley’s consortium recently agreed a deal for a minority stake in the club, signalling a shift in strategic direction. While the investment does not immediately unlock new spending power, it provides stability and could pave the way for more targeted recruitment in future windows.

The club’s focus now turns to squad balance. With Antonio’s future uncertain and Declan Rice’s departure last summer still a recent memory, West Ham are rebuilding with pragmatism. Their interest in reinforcing the defence extends beyond Potts, with reports suggesting Ajax and Real Sociedad are monitoring West Ham’s attacking options. The club’s willingness to sell could create a domino effect, particularly if they secure funds to address other positions.

For Potts, a move to Club Brugge offers a chance to revive his career in a league where he can compete regularly. The Belgian Pro League is known for developing young defenders, and Brugge’s European ambitions could provide the platform he needs. If the medical is successful, he will join a side that has already made seven signings this summer, including former Chelsea defender Levi Colwill on loan.

West Ham’s window may be closing, but their business is far from over. The Potts deal, if completed, will be a statement of intent—not in ambition, but in necessity. The club is reshaping its squad with the realities of financial fair play and squad harmony in mind, and every move now carries the weight of long-term planning.
