West Ham latest: Todibo joins Lens on loan

West Ham’s defensive reshuffle continues apace with Jean-Clair Todibo joining Ligue 1 side Lens on a season-long loan, a move that underlines the Hammers’ need to balance squad depth with financial prudence. The 25-year-old centre-back arrives at Stade Bollaert-Delelis with 24 senior appearances for West Ham across all competitions, a tally that reflects both his potential and his lack of first-team minutes under David Moyes. Lens, fresh from a 2-1 defeat at Monaco that leaves them sixth, will hope Todibo can bolster a defence that has conceded 11 goals in four league games this term.

Why the loan matters now

Todibo’s departure comes less than a week after West Ham completed the £40 million sale of Ousmane Diouf to Brentford, a deal that triggered a clause requiring the Hammers to reinvest a portion of the fee in defensive recruitment. The club’s decision to loan rather than sell reflects a pragmatic approach: retaining a player with Champions League pedigree while easing wage pressure and freeing up a non-homegrown spot. Lens, meanwhile, have made four defensive additions this summer—including Belgium international Zeno Debast—and will view Todibo as a short-term solution while they assess longer-term options.

Moyes now faces a squad puzzle. With Kurt Zouma sidelined by a calf strain and Angelo Ogbonna suspended, West Ham’s backline is threadbare ahead of Tuesday’s Championship clash against Wolves at the London Stadium. The Premier League side’s injury list already includes midfield anchor Tomas Souček, who remains doubtful for the evening kick-off. Wolves, themselves missing Kieran Trippier, Yerson Mosquera, Rafiki Said and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, will arrive with a similar handicap, setting up a fixture where squad depth could decide the outcome.

What comes next for West Ham

The loan deal is structured to allow Todibo to return in January if Lens’ financial situation changes, but the club’s hierarchy will be watching closely. A strong start in Ligue 1 could prompt a recall, while poor form might see the Frenchman stay put until the end of the season. Either way, the move frees up a registration for West Ham to pursue another defensive signing before the transfer window closes.

Attention now turns to the London Stadium, where West Ham will look to rediscover their rhythm after a sluggish start to the campaign. The Hammers sit 12th after three Premier League games, with just one win and a goal difference of minus-2. A victory against Wolves would provide a morale boost, especially if Souček returns to fitness. The midfielder’s absence has been felt in both build-up play and late-game control, areas where West Ham have struggled to impose themselves.

For Lens, Todibo’s arrival is a statement of intent as they chase a top-four finish under new manager Will Still. The club’s transfer activity this summer—spending over £50 million on defensive reinforcements—suggests they are targeting a deeper run in Europe, but early stumbles against Monaco and Lille have exposed vulnerabilities. Todibo’s experience in the Premier League, albeit limited, could prove crucial in tight Ligue 1 encounters.

Tactical implications

Todibo’s loan is unlikely to shift West Ham’s tactical approach under Moyes, who favours a back three when fully fit. The Frenchman’s ability to play as a right-sided centre-back in a three could offer flexibility if Zouma or Ogbonna are unavailable. Lens, meanwhile, have used a back four under Still, but Todibo’s comfort in either system adds value. His physical presence and aerial ability could help Lens defend set-pieces more effectively, an area where they have conceded five goals already this season.

The loan also raises questions about West Ham’s long-term defensive strategy. With Diouf’s sale and Todibo’s departure, the club now has just three senior centre-backs—Zouma, Ogbonna, and new signing Gonçalo Inácio. The latter has yet to make his debut, leaving Moyes with few options if injuries strike again. A January reinforcement seems inevitable, with clubs like Aston Villa already circling for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, another player whose future at the club is uncertain.

For now, West Ham must focus on Tuesday’s fixture. Sky Sports+ will broadcast the match live from 7.45pm, with coverage starting at 7.30pm. The stakes are high: a win would move the Hammers closer to the top half, while a loss could see them slip further behind the chasing pack. With injuries and loan moves shaping the squad, every point counts.

Todibo’s loan is a calculated gamble—one that could pay off for both parties. For West Ham, it’s a chance to recoup some value from a player they could no longer guarantee minutes. For Lens, it’s a short-term fix in a defence that has already leaked too many goals. The coming weeks will reveal whether the move strengthens both clubs or merely postpones the inevitable.
