West Ham sign winger Solomon from Tottenham

West Ham have pulled off a shrewd coup in the Championship transfer market, securing Manor Solomon from Tottenham Hotspur on a three-year deal for a reported £5 million fee. The Israel international, who arrives as the Hammers’ third permanent signing of the summer, brings Champions League experience from his time at Fiorentina and a Championship-winning pedigree from his loan spell at Leeds United last season. His arrival at London Stadium is the latest twist in a summer of upheaval for both clubs, with West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League forcing a rebuild and Tottenham’s defensive crisis deepening.

Why Solomon fits the Hammers’ approach

Solomon’s profile aligns with what West Ham need in this cycle. At 27, he offers Premier League-ready quality while commanding a wage structure suited to Championship constraints. His 19 appearances for Fiorentina in Serie A last season—where he played under Vincenzo Italiano—provide tangible proof of his ability to compete in top-tier football, a prerequisite for an immediate return. The Israel international’s Championship credentials were further burnished by his role in Leeds’ 2024-25 title triumph, where he contributed to their promotion push during a loan spell.

West Ham’s recruitment strategy has hinged on securing players with Premier League experience who can navigate the second tier without a steep learning curve. Solomon ticks that box, and his comments upon joining underscored his ambition to help the club regain its top-flight status. The Hammers have now completed three permanent signings this summer, following Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid and former Netherlands defender Joel Veltman.

Tottenham’s defensive crisis collides with West Ham’s rebuild

Tottenham’s loss of Solomon is symptomatic of a wider malaise at Spurs, where defensive uncertainty has overshadowed their summer. The club’s captain, Cristian Romero, is now openly targeting a move to Arsenal, a development that has exposed the fragility of their backline following the departures of key personnel. Romero’s father, acting as his agent, confirmed his desire to join the Gunners, stating: “He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause.” Tottenham’s inability to retain defensive stability has coincided with West Ham’s proactive approach to rebuilding under new ownership, with a consortium led by David Sullivan and Daniel Křetínský finalising a minority stake in the club.

West Ham’s summer has been defined by targeted recruitment, contrasting with Tottenham’s defensive instability where Romero’s potential exit could force Spurs into a late scramble for replacements. The north London club face a Carabao Cup second-round tie against Charlton Athletic on August 26, a match that offers little respite from their defensive concerns.

What comes next for both clubs

For West Ham, the immediate priority is to integrate Solomon into their Championship campaign, where they face Southampton in the Carabao Cup second round on August 26. Their tie against the Saints, a club with Premier League aspirations of their own, will serve as an early test of Solomon’s readiness to lead the line. The Hammers’ cup run could provide valuable momentum as they target an immediate return to the top flight.

Tottenham, meanwhile, face a Carabao Cup second-round draw against Charlton Athletic, a tie that offers little respite from their defensive concerns. The potential loss of Romero—combined with ongoing uncertainty over their defensive recruitment—could force manager Ange Postecoglou to reshuffle his backline before the Premier League campaign resumes. The North London derby looms large over Spurs’ summer, with Arsenal poised to benefit from any further instability at White Hart Lane.

Solomon’s move is a calculated gamble by West Ham, one that reflects their pragmatic approach to life in the Championship. The Hammers are not merely assembling a squad for survival; they are constructing a team capable of challenging for promotion from day one. Tottenham, by contrast, are haemorrhaging defensive quality at the worst possible moment, with Romero’s potential exit threatening to destabilise their entire defensive structure. As both clubs prepare for their Carabao Cup ties, the contrast between their summer trajectories could not be starker.
