Florian Wirtz: Liverpool’s £115m gamble on a player who must deliver now

Florian Wirtz arrived at Anfield last summer for £115m, a fee that demanded he transform Liverpool’s attack. Instead, the German’s first season under Arne Slot exposed doubts about his readiness for the Premier League’s physicality. Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, has questioned whether Wirtz “possesses the tools to overcome the challenge,” arguing that the midfielder has so far resembled “a useful squad addition” rather than the game-changer his price tag implied. With a new campaign approaching, Wirtz’s ability to justify that outlay will shape Liverpool’s title ambitions—and the club’s transfer strategy for years to come.

From Leverkusen promise to Anfield uncertainty

Wirtz’s reputation preceded him. At Bayer Leverkusen, he orchestrated attacks with composure, linking midfield and attack in a way few young players could. Yet the Premier League’s intensity—its speed, aggression, and relentless pressing—has tested him differently. Carragher, writing in the Telegraph, noted that Wirtz “does not have the athleticism or running and shooting power” of a Kevin De Bruyne, the benchmark for Premier League playmakers. Even in his brightest moments, the German looked “neat and tidy” rather than decisive in and around the penalty box, a trait that jarred with the expectations tied to a £115m fee.

Slot’s system last season didn’t help. With Liverpool’s defensive frailties forcing pragmatic shifts, Wirtz was often deployed on the left wing, a role that diluted his creative influence. Carragher warned that if Wirtz fails to assert himself early this term, Slot’s successor—Andoni Iraola—may be forced to sacrifice attacking principles for pragmatism. The risk is clear: another season of disjointed contributions could push Wirtz to the fringes, or worse, into a squad role that undercuts his value.

Liverpool’s transfer window exposes wider anxieties

Liverpool’s summer activity underscores their desperation to address areas that masked Wirtz’s shortcomings last season. A £50m bid for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh was rejected, leaving the Reds scrambling for a Salah successor. Curtis Jones, once seen as a long-term option, is now set to join Inter Milan for £30m, a sale that further thins Liverpool’s midfield options. Meanwhile, reports suggest Liverpool are monitoring Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, though PSG’s valuation of £145m presents a steep hurdle.

These moves reflect a club in flux. The departure of Mohamed Salah’s creativity has left a void, and Wirtz’s inability to fill it has accelerated Liverpool’s search for alternatives. The question isn’t just whether Wirtz can deliver—it’s whether Liverpool can afford to wait for him to do so. As Carragher noted, the Premier League’s physical demands may demand more than adaptation; they may require a different profile entirely.

The tactical dilemma: Can Wirtz adapt or must Liverpool adapt around him?

Wirtz’s strengths—vision, passing range, and technical ability—are undeniable. But the Premier League rewards players who impose themselves physically as much as technically. His struggles last season weren’t just about form; they were about fit. Slot’s system prioritized width and defensive solidity, leaving little room for Wirtz’s subtle, probing style to flourish. If Iraola opts for a more direct approach, Wirtz could be squeezed out entirely.

Yet the alternative—reshaping Liverpool’s attack to accommodate Wirtz—risks diluting the team’s identity. The Reds’ recent transfer activity suggests they’re hedging their bets. Minteh, if secured, would add pace and directness, while Barcola could inject a different kind of creativity. But these moves come at a cost, both financially and in terms of squad balance. Liverpool cannot afford another season where their most expensive player is a peripheral figure.

For Wirtz, the stakes are existential. A strong start against teams like Manchester United—where he could face Jurgen Klopp’s new-look side—would silence critics. A repeat of last season’s inconsistency would force Liverpool to confront an uncomfortable truth: that £115m might not buy a Premier League playmaker, but a player who still needs to earn his place.

Liverpool’s title ambitions hinge on Wirtz’s response. If he delivers, the gamble pays off. If not, the club may need to rethink its entire midfield strategy—and fast.
