World Cup LIVE: Cristiano Ronaldo in tears after last game as Folarin Balogun gets new penalty

Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup swansong ended in tears on Sunday night as Spain’s late strike condemned Portugal to a 1-0 defeat in Dallas, ending the 41-year-old’s fifth and likely final tournament. The European champions, led by Arsenal’s Mikel Merino, will now face either the United States or Belgium in the quarter-finals after a stoppage-time winner sealed their progression. Meanwhile, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has faced fresh scrutiny over the governing body’s handling of Folarin Balogun’s eligibility saga, as the striker’s red card against Belgium was downgraded to a suspended ban ahead of their Round of 16 clash.

Portugal’s curtain call ends in heartbreak

Ronaldo’s international career concluded in defeat as Spain’s Mikel Merino ghosted in at the far post to fire home the only goal of the game in the 92nd minute. The strike ended Portugal’s campaign and confirmed Spain’s place in the last eight, where they await the winner of Tuesday’s all-European tie between Belgium and the United States. Roberto Martínez, Portugal’s head coach, confirmed his departure after the match, while Ronaldo was visibly emotional as the final whistle sounded in Texas.

The result marked the end of an era for both Ronaldo and Martínez, whose side failed to progress beyond the Round of 16 despite the talismanic forward’s presence. Spain, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run under Luis de la Fuente and will now prepare to face a quarter-final opponent yet to be decided. The late drama in Dallas underscored the unpredictability of knockout football, where a single moment can redefine a nation’s tournament.

Infantino under fire over Balogun’s eligibility

FIFA’s handling of Folarin Balogun’s red card against Belgium has reignited debate over player eligibility rules ahead of the United States’ Round of 16 tie. The striker, who had initially been banned for the match, saw his suspension downgraded to a suspended ban, allowing him to feature against Belgium. The decision drew criticism from US President Donald Trump, prompting a response from Infantino, who defended the governing body’s processes.

The controversy centres on Balogun’s eligibility to represent the United States, a debate that has simmered since his inclusion in the squad. With Belgium’s campaign now hanging in the balance, the fallout from the ruling could have far-reaching implications for the tournament’s next stages. Infantino’s intervention suggests the issue is far from settled, as football’s governing body grapples with the consequences of its own regulations.

Spain’s tactical resilience secures quarter-final spot

Spain’s victory over Portugal was built on resilience and a refusal to yield under pressure. Merino’s late intervention highlighted the depth of a squad that has steadily improved under de la Fuente, with the midfielder’s composure underlining the team’s growing confidence in high-stakes moments. Portugal, despite Ronaldo’s presence, struggled to break down a disciplined Spanish defence, which absorbed wave after wave of attacks before striking in the dying embers.

The tactical contrast was stark: Spain’s structured approach, built on possession and pressing, contrasted with Portugal’s reliance on individual brilliance. Yet it was the collective endeavour of the Spanish side that prevailed, a reminder that modern tournament success often hinges on more than just star power. With England already through to the quarter-finals after their dramatic win over Mexico, the stage is set for a series of intriguing clashes in the knockout rounds.

As the World Cup progresses, the themes of legacy, controversy, and tactical evolution continue to shape the narrative. Ronaldo’s emotional exit serves as a poignant reminder of football’s human dimension, while the Balogun saga underscores the administrative complexities that underpin the game. With Spain and England among the last 16, the tournament’s next phase promises both drama and debate.
