World Cup LIVE: Egypt star claims Argentina win was RIGGED as FIFA quietly issues new bans

Egypt’s forward Mostafa Ziko has launched a blistering attack on the officiating of Argentina’s 3-2 World Cup quarter-final victory in Atlanta, calling the game “rigged” and accusing the referee of relentless interference. His remarks came as FIFA quietly handed down two new suspensions, underscoring the escalating tensions that now shadow the tournament. With Morocco facing France in the next quarter-final, the fallout from Argentina’s controversial win threatens to overshadow the competition’s next act.

Controversy erupts as Egypt denounces Argentina’s win

Ziko, who scored Egypt’s second goal in the 38th minute, did not mince his words after the Pharaohs’ dramatic collapse in Atlanta. “It was a rigged game. It wasn’t our fault. That referee… it seems like this match was rigged,” he told reporters in the mixed zone. “We were winning 2-0, and he kept coming at us.” His comments followed two decisive VAR interventions that Egypt viewed as unfavourable: a 57th-minute disallowed goal for an alleged foul on Nicolás Tagliafico in the build-up to Julián Álvarez’s equaliser, and the refusal to award a penalty in the 79th minute when Mohamed Salah was bundled over by Lisandro Martínez inside the area. The sense of injustice among the Egyptian camp was palpable, with Ziko even offering sarcastic congratulations to Argentina “on another World Cup.”

The referee’s involvement extended beyond the key decisions. Egypt players felt the official’s presence disrupted their rhythm, with Ziko claiming the match had been influenced from the outset. The timing of his outburst—immediately after a defeat that eliminated one of the tournament’s outsiders—amplified its impact, turning a dramatic comeback into a lightning rod for debate about refereeing standards at the World Cup. The Egyptian FA later issued a statement demanding clarity on the officiating, while social media erupted with clips of the referee’s positioning during critical phases of play.

FIFA’s quiet crackdown amid escalating tensions

While Ziko’s allegations dominated headlines, FIFA moved behind the scenes to enforce discipline. Two football officials from the United States men’s national team were handed suspensions following Monday’s 4-1 defeat to Belgium. Sam Zapatka, the USMNT’s team manager, received a three-match ban for breaching technical area regulations, while Frank Pannell, US Soccer’s vice president of security, was handed a one-match suspension for unsporting behaviour after confronting Belgian staff during the post-match melee. Both bans were confirmed by FIFA’s official website on Tuesday morning, though the governing body provided no further detail on the incidents.

The timing of these bans—released during a period of heightened scrutiny over refereeing decisions—raises questions about whether FIFA is attempting to balance accountability with optics. While player bans typically dominate discussions, the inclusion of managerial and executive figures suggests a broader interpretation of disciplinary reach. Whether these measures will quell broader frustrations over officiating remains to be seen, but they underscore FIFA’s dual approach: public silence on refereeing controversies, paired with targeted sanctions behind closed doors. The suspensions were added to FIFA’s official disciplinary listings without fanfare, a pattern that has drawn criticism from transparency advocates.

Quarter-finals set to ignite as Morocco await France

The tournament’s next chapter begins tonight when France face Morocco in Boston, a clash that pits the pre-tournament favourites against the tournament’s most unexpected quarter-finalist. Kylian Mbappé will line up with a golden boot opportunity in sight, seeking to surpass Lionel Messi in the scoring charts after netting twice in the group stage. Morocco, meanwhile, carry the momentum of a penalty shootout victory over Switzerland, where Colombia’s lack of attacking threat—just two shots on target in 90 minutes—ultimately cost them in the shootout.

As the drama shifts from Atlanta to Boston, the fallout from Argentina’s controversial win lingers. The question now is whether FIFA’s quiet suspensions will be enough to temper the simmering frustrations over refereeing, or if Ziko’s accusations will embolden further criticism. With the quarter-finals poised to deliver more high-stakes theatre, the integrity of the competition—and the decisions that shape it—will remain under the microscope.

One thing is certain: the World Cup’s narrative is no longer confined to the pitch. Officiating controversies, executive bans, and player outbursts are now as much a part of the story as the goals themselves. Tonight’s fixture offers a chance for redemption, but the shadow of Argentina’s disputed victory will not fade quickly.
